Sergeant Nathaniel Brannick is trapped in Victorian London during a period of disease, crime, and insatiable vices. One night, Brannick returns from work to find an eerie messenger in his flat who warns him of dark things to come. When his next case involves a victim who suffered from consumption, he uncovers clues that lead him to believe the messenger's warning. This was a great read - I usually don't pick up a vampire story, but Detective Brannick got my attention and soon I was involved. Alcala has a skill for speaking in just the right voice - whether its a lazy cockney cop like Davis, or a more sophisticated character like Brannick. But the supernatural characters went right to the top. I actually heard their voices and could hear the differences between each of the characters. When an author deals with a different time and place, and then adds in the dark corners of Old London and Europe - and it sounds authentic - that's impressive. There is mystery, pathos, romance, empathy and action enough for all readers. A lot of research must have gone into this novel, in addition to mega-creativity. I will watch for Alcala's next book.Product details

Consumed Justin A 9781937365585 Books Reviews
I'm a huge fan of DC Comics' Hellblazer (John Constantine, Hellblazer) series, so when I read the description for Consumed in the store, I decided to give it a try. It was a fun read - surreal, well written, and most importantly, entertaining. If I had to put the book on a shelf in a library, it would be in the occult detective fiction section. Nathaniel Brannick isn't John Constantine, but if you enjoy a good urban fantasy with a strong dose of noir, interesting characters, and a compelling story, you'll enjoy Consumed.
Who doesn't like a good mystery novel with a creepy London vibe from the Jack the Ripper era? Consumed is a fast paced thriller with a very sad, but interesting main character who floats through life trying to make up for his wife's death. You really feel for the main character throughout the story, but at the same time understand where he's coming from. I did like Alcala's perspective on the supernatural. They aren't misunderstood creatures, but hideous monsters that have caused Nathan to search for answers. Great read.
Ok, supernatural is my thing! If this is also you this is right up your alley. The fact that this book has the power to have you reading more and not putting it down it's insane! That's how you know that's a great writer! Great read!
It’s strangely satisfying when a relatively untested author (or one who’s simply new to your library or reading regiment) manages to weave different genres and entertaining elements into a comfortable quilt of many colors. That’s what Justin Alcala has done with his novel Consumed, which is a wild mystery drenched in late 1800s Scotland Yard noir, then dipped in a bit of Stephen King-esque mysticism, and sprinkled with scenes and spectacles straight out of late-night anime adventures. At first, the liberal blending of these individual elements and character concepts is a oddly jarring, but once the flow is established and the pieces start falling into place the uncanny ride Alcala takes on gets a bit clearer and a whole lot stranger. I found it all surprisingly enjoyable.
When the novel began as what seemed like a straightforward private investigator tale with the clock turned back a few decades, I was drawn in enough by the idea to consider myself sold. We get too many smoky-room detectives helping dames these days, and it’ll be fun to see what this author can do with his twist and silver tongue, I said.
Then, as the book’s description points out, the witch hunters show up. That’s when this little tale of foppish Sherlock Holmes & Watson types gets turned upside down and thrust into some seriously strange territory. As an outline, Consumed might read like an intricate fan fiction mashup that’s just a little too outlandish to connect with casual readers, but in reality it all comes together under the strongly-crafted prose and eye for detail on display. Alcala can twist a sentence and conjure up an image, that’s for sure, and it’s both the small moments used to quickly accentuate a character as well as the sweeping sensations dug out of a heavy action scene that elevates the book above the sea of chat room fantasy and forum-inspired fan fiction. Not only was the adventure engaging, but the cockney casualness of the work itself was thoroughly enjoyable.
Great, quick, entertaining read from an author just making his mark.
A great read. Story flows through smoothly.
My husband and I love the book! Great work Justin!
I came at this title less then interested in a book set in Victorian Era London, though the cast of amazing characters and witty dialog with serious snap quickly demanded my attention and provided a wealth of entertainment. Often I have a difficult time finding books with characters I am willing to invest myself in or enjoy. Justin Alcala's Consumed provided an entire cast of extremely colorful and believable characters that I could not help but enjoy from beginning to end. It was because of the characters that I became invested in the setting and premise despite my previous reservations against it. In the end I found the book to be a very immersive read and I highly recommend Justin Alcala's Consumed to anyone who enjoys reading for the opportunity to get lost in a well told story filled will well developed characters and a rich setting.
