The Return of the Bees Marianne Betterly 9781421837567 Books Reviews
Sometimes, I’ll pick up a volume of poetry, open it at random and be rooted to the spot. This is exactly what happened when I delved into Marianne Betterly’s The Return of the Bees, starting with the title poem purposefully placed in the middle of the book where it strategically holds firm its central theme
with its last lines “a swarm of souls/ flying into the night.”
Some poets write, in the first instance, for themselves, concealing much more than revealing, keeping the reader out. But of this crime, Betterly is innocent. Fully alive in her personal and elegant voice, she shares her widowhood while still bearing witness to moments of miracles in her everyday life. She keeps going in spite of enormous sorrow and loss. She generously takes us by the hand and leads us through the processes of how the mind provides the patterns that not only make sense of what we see, but show us how to look. She focuses on hidden meaning, dreams of their presences, gives them lives connected to her own that in turn, connect to ours.
On each page of this enormously satisfying collection, there is a sincere and sweet charm in her dignifying of the domestic, and a tough power in her sensuous writing about kisses. Yes, kisses, yes, Betterly is a sensual poet. The kisses she delivers in these beautiful poems are deeper than goodbye kisses, hotter than forbidden kisses at midnight, and hidden, soft, almost metered kisses that taste like juicy fruit tongues.
Through an amazing number of insights, Betterly shows us how to recognize synchronicity in everyday life. The gift of this remarkable achievement is her sharp and exact language that pushes and pulls the reader from one poem to the next on a reassuring tour of emotional as well as spiritual discovery. She enlightens. “Suddenly the sun pierces the sky,/lighting puddles,/placing halos on tree tops,/ brilliance.”
Of all the thousands of poets I've heard heard at cafes and poetry books I've read, Marianne is my favorite poet of all. Her poems tell a story, an interesting story, and I feel compelled to read on to see where the story leads. The language, images, metaphors are wonderful. She's also the only poet who has ever made me cry (her widow poems). There is also delight, sensuousness, and humor to her writing. Marianne is never boring or so abstract you have no idea what she's trying to say.
I vote Marianne to be America's next poet Laureate!
